چکیده
| A growing body of evidence supports crucial roles for glycans at various pathophysiological steps of tumour progression. Glycans regulate tumour proliferation, invasion, haematogenous metastasis and angiogenesis, and increased understanding of these roles sets the stage for developing pharmaceutical agents that target these molecules. Such novel agents might be used alone or in combination with operative and/or chemoradiation strategies for treating cancer. 526 | JULY 2005 | VOLUME 5 www.nature.com/reviews/cancer R E V I E W S

Whole Tumor Cell Vaccine Adjuvants: Comparing IL-12 to IL-2 and IL-15
Cancer immunotherapy (passive or active) involves treatments which promote the ability of the immune system to fight tumor cells. Several types of immunotherapeutic agents, such as monoclonal antibodies, immune checkpoint inhibitors, non-specific immunomodulatory agents, and cancer vaccines are currently under intensive investigation in preclinical and clinical trials. Cancer vaccines induce pe...
متن کاملJuglone exerts antitumor effect in ovarian cancer cells
Objective(s): Juglone is isolated from many species of the Juglandaceae family and used as an anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-tumor therapeutic. Here, we evaluated juglone-induced antitumor effect in ovarian cancer SKOV3 cells. Materials and Methods: MTT assay was performed to examine juglone anti-proliferative effect. Cell cycle and apoptosis were studied using flow cytometry in juglone-t...
متن کاملCancer stem cells: therapeutic targets
Cancer stem cells (CSCs) have been identified as rare cellular populations in many cancers, including leukemia and solid tumors. This minor subpopulation of cancerous cells is immortal tumor-initiating cells which thought to be responsible for cancer initiation, progression, metastasis, recurrence and drug/radiation resistance. Low proliferative rate, high self-renewing capacity, differentiatio...
متن کاملCEA Plasmid as Therapeutic DNA Vaccination against Colorectal Cancer
Background: Human colorectal cancer cells overexpress carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). CEA is a glycoprotein which has shown to be a promising vaccine target for immunotherapy against colorectal cancer. Objective: To design a DNA vaccine harboring CEA antigen and evaluate its effect on inducing immunity against colorectal cancer cells in tumor bearing mice. <str...
متن کاملHuman Cancer Modeling: Recapitulating Tumor Heterogeneity Towards Personalized Medicine
Despite diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic advances, growing incidence of cancer and high rate of mortality among patients affected by specific cancer types indicate current clinical measures are not ideally useful in eradicating cancer. Chemoresistance and subsequent disease relapse are believed to be mainly driven by the cell-molecular heterogeneity of human tumors that necessitates perso...
